Shame and embarrassment

Around the age of two and a half, a child realises that if they have acted "differently" to the adults around them, they will be ostracised, shamed or punished. A feeling of shame develops. The more intensely the rejection, shaming and punishment is repeated, the deeper the shame becomes engrained in the person. How can we recognise, understand and treat the issue of shame in our clients?
